Grandmaster P Harikrishna played out a draw with Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia in the 10th round of Corus International Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee in Holland.

Harikrishna again got a slightly better position and for another time in the tournament his form betrayed him a bit as Sargissian came back strongly in this Italian opening game. The middle game saw some fireworks from Sargissian and the Armenian was on top when the Queens got traded. It was an endgame wherein Harikrishna had to do a lot of hard work with his knight taking on dancing on the chequered board. With a pawn less, it is not easy to defend the knight endgames but Harikrishna posed enough problems for Sargissian to liquidate to a drawn endgame.

With only three rounds to come Harikrishna will need a couple of victories for a pedestal finish. In the next round Harikrishna is slated to play Ivan Cheparinov of Bulgaria.

As things stand in ‘B’ group, Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia seems to be running away with the title here with 7.5 points already in the bag from first 10 rounds. Sharing the second spots are Etienne Bacrot of France and Nigel Short of England on 6.5 points each while another half point adrift is Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi. Harikrishna is currently joint fifth in the event and can possibly finish in top three with an improved performance in the remaining games.

The other Indian contestant in the ‘B’ group, Koneru Humpy has not had a great tournament thus far and she too would be keen to finish on a positive note. The result for Humpy have been quite unlike her thus with one victory, a couple of losses and seven draws. In her 10 th roundgame Humpy was held to a draw by Yifan Hou of China. In the 11th round Humpy plays against Daniel Stellwagen of Holland.

Meanwhile a lot of action was witnessed yet again in the ‘A’ group. Anand remained in joint third spot after drawing with Leko and inching up to 5.5 points. The high point of the day was Norwegian Magnus Carlsen’s remarkable recovery against local favourite Loek van Wely. It was a completely lost position for Carlsen when disaster struck van Wely in mutual timescramble. The positionfirst became a draw and later the Dutchman blundered again to give the point in a platter.

A lucky Carlsen thus regained the sole lead as most of the games in this section ended in draws. The Norwegian took his tally to 6.5 points and Levon Aronian of Armenia is now in second spot with 6 points in his kitty. A pack of five players – Michael Adams of England, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan including Anand are still in reckoning for top honours on 5.5 points each in the premier group.

Parimarjan Negi recovered smartly in the ‘C’ group and is now in the joint second spot on 6.5 points. The tournament leader in this section – Fabiano Caruana was beaten by Li Shilong of China.

Results round 10 Group A: Loek van Wely (Ned, 4) lost to Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 6.5); Viswanathan Anand (Ind, 5.5) drew with Peter Leko (Hun, 5); Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 5.5) drew with Boris Gelfand (Isr, 3.5); Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 5.5) drew with Veselin Topalov (Bul, 5); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 5) drew with Judit Polgar (Hun, 4.5);
Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 3) lost to Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 5.5); Michael Adams (Eng, 5.5) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 6).

Group B: Nigel Short (Eng, 6.5) beat Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 4); Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 6.5) drew with Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 5); P. Harikrishna (Ind, 5.5 ) drew with Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 3.5); Hou Yifan (Chn, 4) drew with Koneru Humpy (Ind, 4.5); Daniël Stellwagen (Ned, 5) drew with Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 5.5); Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 2)
lost to Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 6); Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 7.5) beat Jan Smeets (Ned, 4.5).

Group C: Irina Krush (Usa, 4.5) beat Arik Braun (Ger, 5); John van der Wiel (Ned, 5.5) drew with Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 5); Li Shilong (Chn, 5) beat Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 7); Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 4.5) beat Efstratios Grivas (Gre, 4.5); Friso Nijboer (Ned, 6.5) beat Dimitri Reinderman (Ned, 6.5); Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 6.5) beat Dennis Ruijgrok
(Ned, 1.5); Peng Zhaoqin (Ned, 3) drew with Mark van der Werf (Ned, 5).

Grandmaster P Harikrishna drew with state-mate Koneru Humpy in the ninth round of the ‘B’ Group of Corus International Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee in Holland.

Playing the black side of a Neo-Grunfeld, Harikrishna did not have much difficult in holding out his position as the central pawns got traded in quick time. Humpy went for quick exchanges leading to a drawn endgame and the queen side pawns were traded to diminish all hopes of an interesting game.

Harikrishna took his personal tally to 5 points out of a possible 9 while Humpy inched up to 4 points in all.

Grandmaster Sergei Movsesian remained in sole lead after settling for a draw with Nigel Short of England. The Slovak GM now has 6.5 points in all and leads the nearest rival Etienne Bacrot by a half point. Short stands sole third on 5.5 followed by Harikrishna, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Erwin L’Ami. With just four rounds to come, Harikrishna will look forward to score wins with his white pieces, the 10th round is important when the SUN-group sponsored meets an out-of-sort Armenian Gabrial Sargissian.

In the previous three rounds Harikrishna could notch only 1 point, losing to Jan Smeets from a level position ion round 6 and drawing with Nepomniachtchi and L’Ami respectively in the 7 th and 8th round. A finishing spurt is what the Hyderabad-based needs right now.

A lot happened in the ‘A’ group in the 9th round. Carlsen’s aspirations suffered a setback against Leko in a wild game where the former played black. It was a blunder in the end that gave Leko a full point. Aronian joined Carlsen in lead on 5.5/9. Yes that’s the leading score in ‘A’ group. Plus four should win here. Mostly solely. Anand drew with Gelfand in quick time to be on 5/9 and a shared third spot.

And it was a well-preserved opening Novelty that gave Topalov a victory over Kramnik. For those who had been worried about and had given up the Moscow variation as white will now have some analytical work to do! Topalov played really well, his ‘a4′ was a star move.

In the ‘C’ group Parimarjan Negi was held to a draw by Mark Van Der Werf. This has been a good recovery by the teenager who now has 5.5 points. He started off with 0/2.

Results round 9 Group ‘A’: Michael Adams (Eng, 5) beat Loek van Wely (Ned, 4); Levon Aronian (Arm, 5.5) drew with Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 3); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 4.5) drew with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 4.5); Judit Polgar (Hun, 4) drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 5); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 4.5) beat Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 5); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 3) drew with Viswanathan Anand (Ind, 5); Peter Leko (Hun, 4.5) beat Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 5.5).

Group ‘B’: Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 6.5) drew with Nigel Short (Eng, 5.5); Jan Smeets (Ned, 4.5) lost to Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 2); Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 5) beat Daniel Stellwagen (Ned, 4.5); Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 5) beat Yifan Hou (Chn, 3.5); Koneru Humpy (Ind, 4) drew with P. Harikrishna (Ind, 5); Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 3) drew with Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 6); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 4.5) beat Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 4).

Group ‘C’: Zhaoqin Peng (Ned, 2.5) drew with Irina Krush (Usa, 3.5); Mark van der Werf (Ned, 4.5) drew with Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 5.5); Dennis Ruijgrok (Ned, 1.5) lost to Friso Nijboer (Ned, 5.5); Dimitry Reinderman (Ned, 6.5) beat Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 3.5); E. Grivas (Gre, 4.5) lost to Shilong Li (Chn, 4); Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 7) beat John van der Wiel (Ned, 5); Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 4.5) beat Arik Braun (Ger, 5)

Grandmaster P Harikrishna played out an exciting draw with GM Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia in the fifth round of the ‘B’ Group of Corus International Chess tournament now in progress here.

Having won the fourth round after a tough fight with Wouter Spoelman of the Netherlands, Harikrishna had his chances against Movsesian too but the latter kept himself in the game with some resourceful display.

Harikrishna moved to 3.5 points out of a possible 5 in the category-15 event and is now in sole second spot behind Etienne Bacrot of France who defeated Jan Smeets of Holland to take his tally to 4 points in all.

With eight rounds still to come, Movsesian and Dutch trio of Smeets, Daniel Stellwagen and Erwin L’Ami are in joint third spot with 3 points each. In the enxt round Harikrishna will meet Smeets and starts as favourtie with white pieces.

Playing black against Movsesian, SUN-Group sponsored Harikrishna faced the Italian game and soon the players were on less trodden path as Harikrishna employed a recently popular system. Getting what is termed as ‘dynamic balance’ in chess jargon, the Indian made progress along the central files and was on top following an error by Movsesian.

The game took another turn soon after as Harikrishna made a mistake and suddenly Movsesian found himself cruising along fine with two pieces for a rook. The resulting position however had some technical problems and Harikrishna played some imaginative moves to keep himself in the game. In the end Movsesian simply lost his extra piece and reached a drawn opposite coloured Bishops endgame.

The other Indian in the fray in ‘B’ group - Koneru Humpy – played out a draw with Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia.

‘In the ‘A’ group world champion Viswanathan Anand’s hunt for his first victory in 2008 did not end as he signed peace with Levon Aronian of Armenia in quick time. Anand took his tally to 2 points out of a possible five with his fourth draw in as many days.

Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan joined overnight leaders Aronian and Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in lead defeating Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine in the ‘A’ group.

Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi continued with his winning ways in the ‘C’ group, accounting for Anna Ushenina of Ukraine for his third straight victory.

Results round 5:

‘A’ Group: Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 2.5) beat Loek van Wely (Ned, 2.5); Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 1) lost to Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 3.5); Michael Adams (Eng, 2.5) drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 3); Levon Aronian (Arm, 3.5) drew with Viswanathan Anand (Ind, 2); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 2.5) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 3.5); Judit Polgar (Hun, 3) drew with Peter Leko (Hun, 2.5); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 2) beat Boris Gelfand (Isr, 1)

Group ‘B’: Daniel Stellwagen (Ned, 3) drew with Nigel Short (Eng, 2.5); Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 0.5) drew with Yifan Hou (Chn, 2); Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 3) drew with P Harikrishna (Ind, 3.5); Jan Smeets (Ned, 3) lost to Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 4); Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 2.5) drew with Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 2); Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 3) beat Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 2.5); Koneru Humpy (Ind, 1.5) drew with Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 2).

Group ‘C’: Friso Nijboer (Ned, 3) beat Irina Krush (Usa, 1); Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 3) beat Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 0.5); Zhaoqin Peng (Ned, 1.5) drew with Shilong Li (Chn, 2); Mark van der Werf (Ned, 2) drew with John van der Wiel (Ned, 3); D Ruijgrok (Ned, 0.5) drew with Arik Braun (Ger, 4.5); Dmitri Reinderman (Ned, 3.5) beat Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 3); E.

Grandmaster P Harikrishna played out a hard-fought draw as black against GM Daniel Stellwagen of Holland in the third round of the ‘B’ group of Corus International Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee.

The SUN-group sponsored Harikrishna slipped to joint third spot on 2 points after the draw but it was expected as he was playing against a formidable opponent in Stellwagen, known as the vastly improving Dutch.

In what was the biggest upset of the event thus far, Chinese sensation Yifan Hou demolished highly regarded Nigel Short of England. In the ‘B’ group all but Hari’s game ended decisively taking local hopeful Jan Smeets and Frenchman Etienne Bacrot at the top of the tables on 2.5 points.

Harikrishna had to defend for sometime in the endgame against Stellwagen who went for a recently popular system in the Marshall gambit. After initial exchanges the players arrived at a routine endgame where Harikrishna had a pawn less typical of the system but he outcome of the game was never in doubt. The peace was signed when only the last white pawn remained.

Humpy went down to Erwin L’Ami in another group ‘B’ clash while Parimarjan Negi scored his first victory at the expense of John Van Der Wiel in the ‘C’ group.

It was a rather sedate day in the premier Group ‘A’ as all the seven games ended in draws. Anand was held early by Eljanov who played interesting chess only for a few moves and then sought solace in equalizing. Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian continue to lead the tables on 2.5 points out of a possible 3.

Results round 3 ’A’ group: Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 2) drew with Loek van Wely (Ned, 1.5); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 1) drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 1.5); Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 1) drew with V. Anand (Ind, 1); Michael Adams (Eng, 1.5) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 2.5); Levon Aronian (Arm, 2.5) drew with Peter Leko (Hun, 1.5); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 1.5) drew with Boris Gelfand (Isr, 1); Judit Polgar (Hun, 1) drew with Veselin Topalov (Bul, 1).

Group B: Results: Yifan Hou (Chn, 1) beat Nigel Short (Eng, 1.5); Daniel Stellwagen (Ned, 2) drew with P. Harikrishna (Ind, 2); Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 0) lost to Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 2.5); Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 2) beat Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 1); Jan Smeets (Ned, 2.5) beat Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 1.5); Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 2) beat Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 1); Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 1.5) beat Koneru Humpy (Ind, 0.5)

Group C: Results: Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 0.5) drew with Irina Krush (Usa, 1); Friso Nijboer (Ned, 1) beat Shilong Li (Chn, 2); Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 1) beat John van der Wiel (Ned, 2); Zhaoqin Peng (Ned, 0.5) lost to Arik Braun (Ger, 3); Mark van der Werf (Ned, 1.5) drew with Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 2); D. Ruijgrok (Ned, 0) lost to Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 3); Dmitro Reinderman (Ned, 2) drew with E. Grivas (Gre, 1.5).

Grandmaster P Harikrishna played imaginatively to beat GM Hou Yifan of China and emerged as a joint leader after the conclusion of the second round of the ‘B’ Group of Corus International Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee in Holland.

After an eventful draw against his former trainer Nigel Short in the opener, Harikrishna needed to do well against Hou and he came up trumps in a keenly contested game.

With 11 rounds still to come in the category 15 event, SUN-Group sponsored Harikrishna took his tally to 1.5 points in all and now leads the tables along with Dutchmen Jan Smeets and Daniel Stellwagen, Short, Bulgarian Ivan Cheparinov, who is better known as Topalov’s second, and French Etienne Bacrot, who is also a keen poker player.

Playing his second white on the trot, Harikrishna started off with the King’s Indian attack. The middle game was sharp as expected and Harikrishna was in command with his firm control in the central squares. Yifan went for the counter-play on the queenside but found the going tough as Harikrishna came with effective measures. Soon the Chinese was pushed to the wall and ended up losing two minor pieces for a rook. The rest was child’s play for Hari and he wrapped up the issue in 57 moves.

In other group ‘B’ games Short played a fine game to beat Erwin L’Ami and Krasenkow came back into reckoning after cruising past Wouter Spoelman. Humpy played out a hard fought draw with Ian Nepomniachtchi.

In the premier group ‘A’ World Champion Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Magnus Carlsen yet again showcased his growing positional acumen to beat Pavel Eljanov while Aronian was in top form against Boris Gelfand. Aronian and Carlsen lead this event with an absolute score.

Results round 2 Group ‘A’: Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 2) beat Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 0.5);

 Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 1) drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 1.5); Loek Van Wely (Ned, 1) drew with Judit Polgar (Hun, 1); Peter Lékó (Hun, 1) drew with Michael Adams (Eng, 1); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 0.5) drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 1); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 0.5) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm, 2); Viswanthan Anand (Ind, 0.5) drew with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 0.5);

Group ‘B’: Nigel Short (Eng, 1.5) beat Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 0.5); Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 1.5) drew with Daniel Stellwagen (Ned, 1.5); P Harikrishna (Ind, 1.5) beat Yifan Hou (Chn, 0); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 1.5) drew with Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 1); Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 1) drew with Jan Smeets (Ned, 1.5); Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 1) beat Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 0); Koneru Humpy (Ind, 0.5) drew with Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 1)

Grandmaster P Harikrishna survived a few anxious moments before settling for a draw with ’settled-in-Greece’ English GM Nigel Short in the first round of the Corus group ‘B’ chess tournament now in progress in the Dutch hamlet Wijk Aan Zee.

Playing white Harikrishna came up with an opening surprise on the first move itself as Short was not expecting to him to open with the King pawn. The Englishman, who had also trained Harikrishna a few years back, opted for the French defense and was in for surprise in one of the off-beat variations.

Harikrishna won the opening battle as Short’s pieces were saddled with the task of defense and the Sun-Group sponsored Hyderabad-based came up with a queen sacrifice to get a better position. However, as Short put up stiff resistance, Harikrishna did not strike the best possible plan and gave up a minor piece to sustain his attack against Short’s king.

As things happened, Harikrishna eventually had to battle with his two Bishops against Short’s queen and found a draw in the end vide repetition of moves. The day sprang a major surprise in the ‘A’ group as World champion Viswanathan Anand went down to Teimour Radjabov. The Indians did not have a good day generally as Koneru Humpy in the ‘B’ group and Parimarjan Negi in the ‘C’ group also suffered defeats. For more details on the event please visit the official site www.coruschess.com
